MANILA, Philippines – K-pop girl band 2NE1 is getting a lot of love from MTV since winning the MTV Iggy Best New Band in the World contest and rocking the MTV Studios on Times Square in New York City last December.
2NE1 member CL and The Black Eyed Peas’ Will.i.am and Apl.de.ap’s performance of “Where is the Love” at the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) last November in Singapore was picked by MTV Iggy as the No. 1 in the “10 International Collaborations That Blew Our Minds in 2011” list.
Not only that. MTV Style has chosen 2NE1 as one of the Top 12 Girls To Watch in 2012 along with the sister of supermodel Kate Moss, “Little Miss Sunshine” actress Abigail Breslin and singer Lana Del Rey.
In the best 2011 international collaboration list, 2NE1 and The Black Eyed Peas’ performance is No.1 followed by Yukimi Nagano and SBTRKT, Superheavy composed of Mick Jagger, Damien Marley, AR Rahman, Joss Stone and Dave Stewart, Bjork and Omar Souleyman, Spoek Mathambo and Wool, Isa GT and Lido Pimienta, BLNRB, A Tribe Called Red and Javier Estrada, and Reggae’s Gone Country.
MTV Iggy said 2NE1’s CL “brought freshness” to the MAMA performance.
“The K-pop star brought freshness to The Black Eyed Pea’s ‘Where is the Love’ when she performed at the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMAs) with Will.i.am and Apl.de.ap. We loved her soulful vocals and urgent rap verses, but we really loved that this pairing was no coincidence. It was a reminder that the Will.i.am-produced 2NE1 album has been recorded and is now awaiting release. Now, there’s an international collaboration we can’t wait to hear,” wrote MTV Iggy.
On the other hand, MTV Style came up with its own list and picked 2NE1 as one of the Top Girls To Watch in 2012.
“K-pop has picked up an insane amount of steam domestically between Girls Generation and 2NE1, with both of their major stateside performances eliciting an inexplicably bananas amount of crowd support. We’re keeping our eyes glued on 2NE1 as the new year progresses, namely because of their bestie collab status with our beloved Jeremy Scott and their enviable collection of high-drama streetwear like JoyRich,” MTV Style described 2NE1.
Other girls on the list are Rooney Mara, Lottie Moss (sister of supermodel Kate Moss), actress Abigail Breslin, actress Holland Roden, fashion blogger Tavi Gevinson, actress Nora Zehetner, rapper Azealia Banks, actress Mae Whitman, Atlanta de Cadenet (daughter of Duran Duran’s John Taylor and Amanda de Cadenet), Elizabeth Olsen, and singer Lana Del Rey.
